Mesbahuddin Ahmed

Ahmed, Mesbahuddin (1920-2002) geoscientist and educationist, born in Dibrugar of Assam, India on 8 September 1920. Mesbahuddin matriculated in 1939 and passed Intermediate examination in 1941. He obtained BSc (honours) degree in Geology from the Presidency College, Calcutta in 1943 and, was awarded gold medal and KL Jubilee Scholarship. He received MSc degree in Geology from the same institution in 1945. He obtained another Master's degree in Economic Geology in 1948 from the Columbia University, New York, USA.

During his active government professional service since graduation till 1982, Mesbahuddin served the Geological Surveys of both Pakistan and Bangladesh as Senior Geologist, Director and Director General. His area of work covered geological mapping, economic mineral search programs, supervision of drilling and geophysical investigations, planning and monitoring of all government development projects in minerals sector as Director General of the geological survey of bangladesh (GSB).

He also holds concurrent charge of the Chief, Planning and Implementation cell in the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources. Since 1982, he worked as Technical Advisor in the Energy Sector in the private organisations, also as Counterpart Consultant to World Bank 2nd Gas Development Project in Bangladesh, Consultant to Bangladesh Building code in Tectonic Framework and Seismic Zoning. He also worked with the National Oceanographic and Maritime Institute (NOAMI) in the implementation of a Government development Project in the country boat sector. He was a life member of the Bangladesh Geological Society and served the Society as its founder vice president and later as its president for two terms.

Mesbahuddin Ahmed passed away on 28 September 2002 in Dhaka. [Sifatul Quader Chowdhury]
