Butterfish
Butterfish (makhan chanda) a commercially important fish of the family Ariommidae, order Perciformes, distributed all over the continental shelf. The fish is represented in the deeper water (30-100 m) of the bay of bengal by only one recognised species, Arioma indica. It is broadly oval with lateral sides moderately compressed, tail forked. Head covered by adipose tissue; body length between 12 and 20 cm. According to the shrimp trawl survey the species accounts for about 0.5% of the total catch. [Md Golam Mostafa]
