Delduar Upazila

Delduar Upazila (tangail district) area 184.54 sq km, located in between 24°05' and 24°14' north latitudes and in between 89°50' and 89°59' east longitudes. It is bounded by tangail sadar and basail upazilas on the north, nagarpur upazila on the south, mirzapur upazila on the east, Nagarpur and Tangail sadar upazilas on the west.

Population Total 207278; male 100638, female 106640; Muslim 183990, Hindu 23274, Buddhist 5, Christian 8 and others 1.

Water bodies Main rivers: dhaleshwari, Lauhajang and Elangjani. '

Administration Delduar Thana was formed in 1981 and it was turned into an upazila on 18 September 1983.'

Archaeological heritage and relics atiya mosque (1606).

War of Liberation Freedom fighters had a fight against Pak army at Shatiapara-Goran area on 3 April 1971. They also carried out operation at various other places of the upazila and notable among them were the encounters at Oikhola, Mangalhore, Gaziabari-Gomzani, Atia, Hingnar and Elashin.

Literacy rate and educational institutions Average literacy 51.6%; male 55.0%, female 48.4%. Noted educational institutions: Sayed Mahabbad Ali Degree College (1985), Sayed Abdul Jabber Government High School (1920), Belayet' Hossen Multilateral High School (1992), Dr. F.R Khan Pilot Institute (1960), Burhanul Ulum Ahmadia Yeachhinia Madrasa (1974).

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 55, fairs 6, most noted of which are Delduar, Lauhati, Ruposir, Nallapara and Elasin hats.

Main exports Bamboo crafts, jute, sugarcane molasses, potato.

Access to electricity All the unions of the upazila are under rural electrification net-work. However 58.4% of the dwellings have access to electricity.

Sources of drinking water Tube-well 96.7%, tap 0.5% and others 2.8%.

Sanitation 75.9% of dwelling households of the upazila use sanitary latrines and 21.0% of dwelling houses use non-sanitary latrines; 3.1% of households do not have latrine facilities.

Natural Disasters Many people died of starvation during the famine of 1943. Besides, the flood of 1988 caused loss of life and heavy damages to settlements, livestock and properties of the upazila.
