Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology

Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) a public university located beside the Dhaka-Jaidevpur-Shimultoli road at 40 km north of Dhaka city and situated on 20.29 acres of land. Established in 1980 as College of Engineering under the University of Dhaka, it was located at Tejgaon Industrial Area. In 1986 it turned into an autonomous body with the name Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT) and was shifted to the present location. The BIT was upgraded as a university in 2003 and was renamed as Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET).

DUET offers BSc and MSc degrees in various disciplines of Engineering. There is a student-advisor in every department of the university. The students may seek his/her advice regarding their academic and personal requirements.'

At present the university has 3 faculties: Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. There are nine departments: Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Textile Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and the Humanities. Through competitive examination, the candidates get admitted into the departments of their choice in accordance with the merit list. The students have the opportunity to enroll themselves in MPhil and PhD course. The university conducts various central and faculty based research program and publishes a half-yearly journal named DUET Journal.

There is a computer center where the students may learn computer. The center also organises seminar on Information Technology. Syndicate is the highest decision-making body of the university. All sorts of statutes are made and amended by senate. Moreover, it approves annual budget, conducts overall review of educational programs and selects panel for the appointment of the Vice Chancellor. The syndicate consists of 15 members including the Vice Chancellor. In addition, there is an Academic Committee; a Monetary Committee. As per rule, the President of Bangladesh is the Chancellor of the University.

At present there are 1858 students and 127 teachers in the University. There are 5 halls including 1 hall for female students:' Dr. Fazlur Rahman Khan Hall, Dr. Kudrat-e-Khuda Hall, Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall, Shaheed Muktijoddha Hall and Madam Curie Hall. 896 students are accommodated to those halls. The central library has 25,000 books and journals. Every department including the central library is connected by Internet. Every hall is facilitated by separate lab and seminar hall.'

The students of the university are involved in various extra-curriculum activities including games, debating competition and other cultural programs. In addition, the students deal with various organisations including DUET computer Society, Central Students' Union, Association for Information and Communication Technology, Computer Club, Debating Society, Environment Club, Photography and Art Culture Association.
