Bourne, Sir Frederick Chalmers

Bourne, Sir Frederick Chalmers (1891-1977) civil servant, first Governor of the province of East Bengal. He was born on 12 August 1891, educated at Rugby and got MA degree from the Oxford Christ Church. He worked in the Queen's Own (R.W. Kent Regiment) 4th Battalion during the period from 1910 to 1920. He joined the Indian Civil Service in 1920 and served in phases as deputy commissioner, Lahore (1937-1940), home secretary to the Punjab Government (1940-1941) and as chief secretary (1941-1945). Bourne was the Acting Governor of Central Province and Berar (May-October 1945), Acting Governor of Assam (1946) and again Governor of Central Province and Berar (1946-1947). After the partition of India he was appointed as Governor of East Bengal which office he held from 15 August 1947 to 5 April 1950. He also served as an Adviser in Goldcoast in 1955. Bourne was honored with the title of K.C.S.I (1946), C.S.I (1944) and C.I.E (1941). He died in 1977. [Abu Jafar]
