Nageshwari Upazila

Nageshwari Upazila (kurigram district) area 417.56 sq km, located in between 25°59' and 26°13' north latitudes and in between 89°35' and 89°52' east longitudes. It is bounded by bhurungamari upazila and west bengal state of India on the north, kurigram sadar upazila on the south, assam state of India on the east, phulbari upazila on the west.

Population Total 394258; male 193444, female 200814; Muslim 375045, Hindu 19105, Buddhist 1, Christian 8 and others 99. Indigenous community such as Buno (a genre of the Santals) lives on the bank of the Naodanga River.

Water bodies Main rivers: brahmaputra, dudhkumar; Naodanga, Payradanga, Madaikhal and Gushalka beels are notable.

Administration Nageshwari Thana was formed in 1793 and it was turned into an upazila on 15 April 1983.

Archaeological heritage and relics Remnants of Zamindar Bari at Bhitarband, Devi Chowdhurani Math at Payradanga.

Historical events Maulana Maulana abdul hamid khan bhasani organized a protest meeting against ‘Bangal Khadao’ (drive away Bengalis) at Royganj of the upazila in 1954.

War of Liberation On 2 September 1971, while attempting to destroy the Kumarpur Bridge freedom fighters Shamsher Ali Basunia, Rustom Ali, Abdul Khaleque, Jamshed Ali and Mizanur Rahman were arrested by the Razakars. On 19 November an encounter was held between the freedom fighters and the Pak army at a place near the Raiganj Bridge in which Lt. Col. Samad, Mizan and Ali Hossain were killed. During the war of liberation the Pak army killed 62 persons in Nilur Khamar Mouza under Santoshpur Union. Besides, the Pak army burnt alive 35 persons to death at a place on the northwest of Nageshwari Health Complex. There is a mass grave at a place adjacent to the Central Shaheed Minar and near the Dharka Beel and a memorial monument was built at Chandipur.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 26, fairs 4, most noted of which are Raiganj Bazar, Andharir Jhar Bazar, Newashi Bazar, Austami Snan Mela, Kali Puja Mela at Madaikhal and Baruni Mela at Berubari.

Main exports Paddy, jute, bamboo, rice, onion, garlic, ground-nut, betel nut.

Access to electricity All the wards and unions of the upazila are under rural electrification net-work. However 17.8% of the dwelling households have access to electricity.

Sources of drinking water Tube-well 96.9%, tap 0.1% and others 3.0%. The presence of arsenic has been detected in the shallow tube-well water of the upazila

Sanitation 57.9% of dwelling households of the upazila use sanitary latrines and 31.9% of dwelling households use non-sanitary latrines; 10.2% of households do not have latrine facilities.
