Ahamed, Emajuddin (1932-2020) political scientist, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, recipient of 'Ekushey Padak'. Emajuddin Ahamed was born on 15 December 1932 at Kalinga village of Nadia district in West Bengal (India). His father Shamsuddin Ahamed was a school teacher and mother Alokjan was house wife. After 1947 partition, their family left India and settled in Chapainawabganj in East Bengal permanently. Amongst 11 brothers and sisters, Emajuddin was the third.

Emajuddin Ahamed passed his Matriculation in 1948, Intermediate in 1950, and B.A. in 1952. In 1954, he obtained his Masters degree in Political Science from the university of dhaka. He had earned a second Masters degree in English from the same University. In 1977, he was awarded Ph.D. degree by the Queen’s University, Canada. He distinguished himself as a brilliant student securing 1st position in First Division in his B.A. examination. Entering professional life he began with Prafullah Chandra College (popularly known as PC College) at Bagerhat as a Lecturer. Thereafter, he served Nilphamari College, Chuadanga College and Rangpur College as Principal. In 1970, he joined the Department of Political Science, University of Dhaka, as a Seniour Lecturer and besides teaching, he held different positions in the University such as, Chairman of the Department of Political Science; Proctor; Provost of Haji Mohammad Mohsin Hall; Pro Vice-Chancellor (1986-1990) and Vice-Chancellor (1992-1996). After his retirement from Dhaka University, he joined a private university named University of Development Alternative (UODA) where he served as Vice-Chancellor until he breathed his last.

During his long teaching career, Professor Emajuddin Ahamed wrote many books and articles in both Bengali and English. He had a number of edited volumes, too. His major works include Political Thought in Medieval Period (in Bengali), Dhaka 2000; Parliamentary Democracy in Bangladesh and Relevant Thought, Dhaka University, 1992; Bureaucratic Elites in Segmented Economic Growth: Bangladesh and Pakistan, UPL 1980; SARC:Seeds of Harmony, UPL 1985; Military Rule and Myth of Democracy, UPL 1988; (ed.), State and Culture, Asiatic Society of Bangladesh 2008, etc.

Professor Emajuddin Ahamed was closely associated with a number of professional associations and learned bodies. He was the President of Bangladesh Political Science Association, Life Member of Bangla Academy, President and Fellow of The asiatic society of bangladesh. He was the Convenor of pro-BNP Shoto Nagorik Committee [Committee of hundred citizens], which included political-minded members from different professions. Emajuddin was awarded Ekushey Padak [medal] in 1992.

Professor Emajuddin Ahamed passed away on 17 July 2020 at the age of 86. His wife's name was Begum Selima Ahamed. She expired before her husband. The couple left behind 3 daughters and 2 sons. [Harun-or-Rashid]
