Alam, Mahbubey
Alam, Mahbubey (1949-2020) seniour advocate of Bangladesh Supreme Court, Attorney General of Bangladesh, General Secretary and President of Supreme Court Bar Association. Advocate Mahbubey Alam was born on 17 February 1949 at Mouchhamandra village in Louhajang upazila under Munshiganj district. His father’s name was Sheikh Wajiuddin and mother was Motijan Bibi. Mahbubey Alam had his BA (Honours) in Political Science from Dhaka University in 1968, while receiving Masters degree from the same University in 1969. In 1972, he obtained LLB degree.
He was enrolled as a member of Dhaka Bar Association in 1973 and an advocate of the Supreme Court in 1975.He was elected General Secretary and President of Supreme Court Bar Association for the periods 1993-1994 and 2007-2008, respectively. He was the longest serving Attorney General of Bangladesh covering the period from 2009 till his death in 2020. Before this, he held the position of Deputy Attorney General during 1996-2001. He was also a member of Senate of National University Bangladesh.
During the army-backed caretaker government (2007-2008), he stood firmly by the side of Awami League Chief Sheikh Hasina, providing all kinds of legal support. As an Attorney General of the State, Mahbubey Alam played his role most diligently and successfully in dealing with the trials of the killers of the Father of the Nation bangabandhu sheikh mujibur rahman and the perpetrators of crimes against humanity and war crimes in collaboration with the Pakistani occupation army in 1971. He earned reputation as a ‘frontline fighter’ in establishing rule of law and ending culture of impunity.
After fighting COVID-19 for 26 days, he expired on 27 September 2020 in Dhaka Combined Military Hospital (CMH) at the age of 71. He was buried in Mirpur martyred intellectual graveyard. His wife’s name is Binota Mahbub. He left behind his wife and one daughter and one son. [Harun-or-Rashid]
