Veterinary Science
Veterinary Science is a branch of medical science also called Veterinary medicine. It is a biological science concerned with the prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and disorders affecting the health of domestic, wild, pet, and aquatic animals. Other than these, veterinary science deals with animal husbandry, breeding, and nutrition and is alsoconcerned with preventing and transmitting animal diseases to people, commonly called zoonotic diseases. Archeological evidence revealed performing veterinary procedures in the Neolithic period (3400-3000 BCE). Modern veterinary science was dignified as a discipline in the 18th century when specialized veterinary colleges were established across Europe. Since then, ithas been evolved into a multifaceted and progressive field, demanding a comparatively long study period to become a competent practitioner. Veterinary practice needs clinical settings. The veterinary science graduates, called Veterinarians,involved indiagnose of animal diseases, vaccinate animals, advice biosecurity measures to prevent infectious diseases, and medicate animals sufferingsickness or infections. Veterinarians also perform surgery on animals when necessary. They also counsel animal owners andfarmers about general animal care, medical circumstances, and treatments.
The veterinarians are also responsible to maintaining the health of food-producing animals toensure safe food supply for human. They are also involved in safe production and processing of animal origin food. The major course curriculum of veterinary science includesanatomy, physiology, genetics, epidemiology, pharmacology, microbiology, pathology, parasitology, animal behavior, animal farming, nutrition and public health.Present-day veterinary science does not only remain in the treatment and control of diseases of domestic and pet animals or birds. Now veterinary science also involves specialized areas like food animal medicine, laboratory animal medicine, zoo animal medicine, wild animal medicine, veterinary public health, zoonosis, aquatic medicine, etc. [Md.
