Ali, Shahed1
Ali, Shahed1 (1899-1958) lawyer, politician. Born in 1899 at village Aswinpur in Matlab thana of Chandpur district, Shahed Ali obtained his BA (Hons) degree in Philosophy from Dhaka College in 1921 and MA in Philosophy from the Dhaka University in 1923. He obtained his BL degree in 1925 and joined the Comilla District Bar in 1926.
His political career began in 1929 when he joined the Krishak Praja Party headed by Sher-e-Bangla ak fazlul huq. He was a member of the central working committee, and vice president of the Comilla district unit of the party. He was elected a member of the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1937. With the floating of the Krishak Sramik Party (1953) by AK Fazlul Huq, Shahed Ali followed his leader as a member of the working committee of the party.
Shahed Ali was elected member of the East Bengal Provincial Assembly in 1954 as a nominee of the united front, and was elected Deputy Speaker in 1955 AD. Subsequently, Shahed Ali left Krishak Sramik Party to join Awami League in 1958. Consequent upon the carrying of a no-confidence motion (20 September 1958) moved by Dewan Mahbub Ali of National Awami Party (NAP) against the then Speaker Abdul Hakim, the assembly session resumed on 23 September 1958 with Deputy Speaker Shahed Ali on the chair. A hot controversy on certain issues between the members of the party in power and of the opposition soon turned into serious collision. Eventually Shahed Ali was seriously wounded. He died in the Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the fourth day of the incident (26 September 1958). [Muazzam Hussain Khan]
