Anderson, Sir George
Anderson, Sir George (1876-1943) professor, educationist. He served in Indian Educational Service and spent most of his career in India. Sir George Anderson son of Edward John Anderson was born in England on 15 May 1876. Anderson was educated at Winchester College and University College, Oxford. He obtained graduation in 1899 with honours in Modern History. He became an assistant teacher at a school in Eastbourne and joined the Transvaal Education Department in 1903.
Transferred to India in 1909, Anderson entered Indian Educational Service and was appointed as professor of English and History at Elphinstone College, Bombay. In 1915 he was made Assistant Secretary of the Indian Education Department, in 1917 Secretary to the Calcutta University Commission and in 1920 Director of Public Instructions of the Punjab. For a time he served as Educational Commissioner of the Government of India. He was decorated with Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1920, knighted in the 1924, and honoured with Companion of the Order of the Star of India (CSI) in 1932. He retired from the Indian Education Service in 1936.
Anderson wrote several books, including A Short History of the British Empire (1912), British Administration in India (1913), Expansion of India, Christian Education in India (1932) and Anderson died on 15 May 1943.
