Rahman, Atiqur
Rahman, Atiqur (1931-1971) physician, martyr intellectual. He was born on 1 February 1931 at village Kolapara in Sreenagar upazila of Munshiganj district. His father Mir Zulfiqar Ahmed was a businessman, and his mother was Amirunnesa. Atiqur Rahman passed Matriculation examination in 1947 from Baliganj A. J Mitra Institution of Kolkata. He obtained LMF degree in 1955 from Mitford Medical School of Dhaka. He got himself admitted into MBBS course in Mitford Medical College and continued his studies upto second year in 1970.
On completion of LMF degree Atiqur Rahman began his career as Medical Officer at the Medical Services Centre of Faridpur District Board. But soon he left the job and returned to Dhaka on some family purposes. Atiqur Rahman then started private practice from his chamber at 9 Shah Saheb Lane in Narinda. Besides, he was a part time attending physician in People’s Ceramic Industries. With the beginning of the War of Liberation in 1971, he used to give free medical treatment to the wounded freedom fighters secretly in their different camps located in areas under Kotwali and Sutrapur thanas of Dhaka city. He is reported to have operated into a seriously wounded freedom fighter secretly at his residence.
Besides, he used to distribute medicine to the freedom fighters operating in and around Dhaka city and often gave them financial help. His secret activities in favour of the liberation war being disclosed Atiqur Rahman became a target of attack of the anti liberation activists. In the night of 26 September 1971 a group of soldiers of Pakistan army abducted Atiqur Rahman from his residence at 18 Gopibagh First Lane, Dhaka. Thereafter he could not be traced.
