Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution
Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) is an agency constituted for the purpose of controlling the standard of service and quality of the goods. In accordance with an ordinance passed on July in 1985, the agency was set up at Tejgaon in Dhaka. An officer equivalent to the rank of Additional Secretary of the Government, serves as the Director General of BSTI. The primary functions of the agency include the control of service and standard of quality of the goods, familiarization of the unit of weight and measurement of international unit, improvement of the activities of controlling the standard and metrological service, submission of the testing facilities of services and goods in addition to the establishment of national standard and improvement. It became the member of International Organisation for Standardization (ISO) in 1974. Apart from the Head Office in Dhaka, it has 6 (Six) regional offices in the district towns. Moreover, a testing laboratory and a metrology laboratory numbered by one in Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna respectively. There are 6 (six) divisions of BSTI which include: Standard Division, Physical Division, Chemical Division, Metrology Division, Certification Marks Division and Administration Division under those there are 17 (Seventeen) departments. This agency has taken initiative creating awareness among various agencies and entrepreneurs for the reason of holding the licenses of ISO, CAC, IEC like ISO-9000, ISO-14000. [Md. Hasinur Rahman]
