Ali, Syed Sultan (1876-1966) a lawyer, politician, legislator and a social worker. Born in the village of Ranbijaypur in Bagerhat district, Syed Sultan Ali, son of a local pleader Syed Emdad Ali, graduated from Ripon College, Calcutta. He joined legal profession as a pleader in 1905. He was a member of Bengal Legislative Council from 1924 to 1926. Politically he was a Khilafatist and a Congress nationalist initially and subsequently an activist of the muslim league. He was a founding member of PC College, Bagerhat. In recognition of his contributions as a social worker, Ali was awarded the title of Khan Sahib in 1939 and Khan Bahadur in 1946. [Syed Ali Imam]
