Bangladesh College of Nursing (BCN) the only nursing college of the country, established at Mohakhali, Dhaka in 1970. Initially the college used to conduct a Diploma-in-Nursing programme. Since the 1990s the diploma programme has been suspended and the college is now offering two types of degree programmes, each of two years duration, one being the BSc in Nursing and the other the BSc in Public Health Nursing. Any student passing out from any of the nursing institutes of the country may apply for admission to these degree courses. However, the applicants must have at least three years practical professional experience in nursing. Since 1978 the Bangladesh College of Nursing has been affiliated to Dhaka University. At present about 120 students are admitted each year. There are some foreign students as well. So far about 1100 students have earned degrees from this college. The principal is the executive head. There are about two dozens faculty members.

The library accommodates more than 5,000 books and journals. There are separate hostels for male and female students. Each student gets a monthly allowance from the government. Besides the BNC, there are about 45 nursing institutes in the country. [Bayazid Akter]
