Disaster Research Training and Management Centre


Disaster Research Training and Management Centre (DRTMC) an autonomous research and training centre established through an initiative of the Department of Geography and Environment of dhaka university (DU) in 1989. It's main objectives are: to build data-base of natural hazard or disaster related works as part of disaster monitoring, planning and training; to conduct short, moderate and long term training programmes on different aspects of disaster and develop necessary curriculum and to increase the awareness of mass people about disaster through various publications.

The Centre is financed by DU and is directed by a 21-member management committee headed by the Vice-Chancellor of DU as its Chairperson. Other members of the council are: Deans of the faculties of Sciences, Social Sciences and Biological Sciences of the university; Chairman of the Department of Geography and Environment; nine academic staff nominated by the academic committee of the Department of Geography and Environment; Director, Institute of Business Administration; one academic staff from the Department of Geography and Environment of jahangirnagar university; Chairman of sparrso; Director Generals of the directorates of Meteorology, Environment and disaster management bureau. Besides, a research officer and a part time computer operator are also engaged in this Centre.

DRTMC has so far completed six research projects and five other research works are currently going on. Durjog Barta a Bangla journal of the Centre appears at regular intervals. The centre runs a specialized library of books on natural disaster and disaster management issues. Currently the library has 222 titles. [Masud Hasan Chowdhury]
