Khwajah an officer with responsibility of collecting revenues of a province. Khwajah was also called Sahib-i-diwan. Khwajah as a provincial diwan was responsible for collecting revenues of Bengal when it constituted a part of Delhi Sultanate. The sultan on the recommendation of the wazir appointed him. A person holding the post was expected to be an expert accountant. His duty was to maintain the account books and submit the statement of accounts to the central government. Generally, the Khwaja was subordinate to the governor of the province, but being directly appointed by the sultan, he was a man of influence, and his presence in the province provided a check on the governor's authority.
