Ila Majumder

Majumder, Ila (1941-2011) was a teacher as well as a classical musician. She was born in 1941 in a musical family in the district of Pabna. She is the wife of Barin Majumder and is the mother of Bappa Majumder, Pop Star of the time. She had been taught on music by Barin Majumder since 1954 and afterward she got married to Barin Majumder in 1960.'

She passed MA in the faculty of Philosophy in 1961 and served as a teacher in the same faculty for a long time. She had served as a teacher in the Wills Little Flower School for 22 years since 1981.  Besides, she had served as a part-time teacher in the National Music College for 15 years.

Alongside her service as a teacher and musician she wrote several books and articles published in various journals. Her notable books which include: Smritite Srutite Barin Majumder (Barin Majumder in my memoir and myth), Dinguli Mor (Nostalgic Days), Sangiter Tattakatha (Philosophy of Music). She encouraged to establish ‘Monihar Sangit Academy’ which was realized by Barin Majumder.

Being a classical Musician, Ila Majumdar practiced music austerely until her death. bangladesh shilpakala academy awarded her for the special contribution in the field of culture. In addition, she was awarded to gold medal in 1958 for her contribution to classical music. She died on 3 May 2011 in Dhaka. [Shamima Akhter]
