Mujibnagar Upazila

Mujibnagar Upazila (meherpur district) area 111.51 sq km, located in between 23°36' and 23°45' north latitudes and in between 88°34' and 88°43' east longitudes. It is bounded by meherpur sadar upazila on the north, damurhuda and Meherpur Sadar upazilas on the east, West Bengal of India on the south and on the west.

Population Total 99143; male 49084, female 50059; Muslim 92970, Hindu 945, Buddhist 13, Christian 5200 and others 15.

Water bodies Bhairab River, Sarashati Canal and Datpur Beel are notable.

Administration Mujibnagar upazila was formed on 24 February 2000.

Archaeological heritage and relics Dargah of Shaikh Farid, Christian Mission and Church at Ballavpur.

War of Liberation Professor mohammad yusuf ali, MNA read out the proclamation of independence at Mujibnagar (former name Bhaberpara, Badyanathtala) on 17 April 1971. On this day the first provisional government of Bangladesh took oath here. Freedom fighters had a number of encounters with the Pak army in the upazila and notable among these were at Mujibnagar, Ballavpur Battala, Ratanpur Ghat, segunbagan, Maniknagar camp and the Camp of Pakistani soldiers at Monakhali.

Access to electricity All the unions of the upazila are under rural electrification net-work. However 63.7% of the dwelling households have access to electricity.

Sources of drinking water Tube-well 93.5%, tap 0.5% and others 6.0%.

Sanitation 46.5% of dwelling households of the upazila use sanitary latrines and 44.2% of dwelling households use non-sanitary latrines; 9.3% of households do not have latrine facilities.
