Nasim, Mohammad
Nasim, Mohammad (1948–2020) Politician, five-time Member of Parliament and Cabinet member. He was born on 2 April 1948 in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj district. His father Captain M Mansur Ali was one of the organizers of the Bangladesh Liberation War, the Finance Minister of the Bangladesh Government during 1971, the Home Minister and the third Prime Minister of the Bangladesh Government during the post-independence period. His mother’s name is Amena Mansur. Mohammad Nasim was the elder of the two sons of captain m mansur ali.
Mohammad Nasim passed Matriculation in 1965 and got admitted in Pabna Edward College. From his college life, he became active in student politics. In the beginning, he was involved in the politics of the Chatra Union (Student Union), but later he joined Chhatra League at the call of Bangabandhu. In 1967, he was elected the Literary and Cultural Secretary of the Edward College Students Union. After passing Intermediate from Edward College, he received his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Jagannath College, Dhaka. Mohammad Nasim was imprisoned many times at different stages of political carrier. In 1966, he was sent to jail along with his father M Mansur Ali while protesting against the Pakistan government. At that time, he was an intermediate examinee. In August 1975, Bangabandhu was brutally killed along with his family members and on November 3 of the same year his father Captain M Mansur Ali and the three others eminent national leaders were killed in the Central Jail. Mohammad Nasim also suffered imprisonment. He was arrested along with many political leaders during the 2007 army-backed caretaker government.
When the War of Liberation started in 1971, the entire family along with his father Captain M Mansur Ali left for India. During this time, Mohammad Nasim played a role in helping refugees and inducting as well as training Freedom Fighters. After independence he became a presidium member of Awami Jubo League in 1973. When a national party of united pro-liberation forces, namely bangladesh krishak sramik awami league was formed in 1975, Mohammad Nasim became the General Secretary of its Pabna district unit. In 1981, Mohammad Nasim was elected Youth Secretary of the Awami League Central Committee. In 1987, he became the publicity Secretary of the party. In 1992 and 1997, he became the organizing Secretary of Awami League. He was elected presidium member of Awami League in 2012.
Mohammad Nasim was first elected Member of Parliament from Sirajganj in 1986 on the nomination of Awami League. He also elected Member of Parliament in 1996, 2001, 2014 and 2018.During his parliamentary carrier, Mohammad Nasim served as Chief Whip, Minister of various ministries, and Chairman of different parliamentary standing committees.
Mohammad Nasim passed away on 13 June 2020 at the age of 72. After his death, his son Tanveer Shakeel Joy was elected Member of Parliament from Sirajganj constituency. Mohammad Nasim’s wife is Laila Arjumand Beethi. They have three children. [Moniruzzaman Shahin]
