National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) the only specialised cardiovascular institute in the country; established in Dhaka in 1978. Besides all kinds of treatment, postgraduate courses like MD (Cardiology), MS (Cardiothoracic Surgery), and D Card. are also offered. In addition, there are courses to train the nurses. It has now a 400-bedded hospital with all kinds of investigations and treatment facilities. Open-heart surgery like valve replacement and vascular operation are regularly done here; there are also facilities for bypass surgery. Besides the admitted patients, the institute's hospital serves about 300 out-door patients daily.

The institute has the departments of cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, anaesthesiology, cardiovascular radiology, biochemistry, pathology, haematology and blood transfusion, epidemiology and preventive medicine, and rehabilitation.
