Shariatpur Sadar Upazila

Shariatpur Sadar Upazila (shariatpur district) area 175.10 sq km, located in between 23°08' and 23°18' north latitudes and in between 90°14' and 90°23' east longitudes. It is bounded by zanjira and naria upazilas on the north, kalkini upazila on the south, damudya, bhedarganj and Naria upazilas on the east, madaripur sadar upazila on the west.

Population Total 199016; male 101265, female 97751; Muslim 187538, Hindu 11437, Buddhist 10, Christian 23 and others 8.

Water bodies Main rivers: Binodpur, Palong; Naria Canal is notable.

Administration Shariatpur (former name Palong) Thana was turned into an upazila in 1984. Municipality was formed in 1990.

History of the War of Liberation During the war of liberation in 1971 a number of encounters were held between the freedom fighters and the Pak army in which about 313 members of the Pak army were killed.

Access to electricity All the wards and unions of the upazila are under rural electrification net-work. However 20.09% of the dwelling households have access to electricity.

Sources of drinking water Tube-well 86.42%, tap 2.17%, pond 4.17% and others 7.24%. The presence of arsenic has been detected in shallow tube-well water of the upazila.

Sanitation 45.75% (rural 35.12% and urban 85.32%) of dwelling households of the upazila use sanitary latrines and 44.42% (rural 53.56% and urban 10.40%) of dwelling households use non-sanitary latrines; 9.83% of households do not have latrine facilities
