St Joseph High School and College
St Joseph High School and College is a catholic boys high school and located at Mohammadpur in dhaka. Initially, Brother Jude, an American Missionary member of Congregation of Holy Cross working under the Catholic Archdiosese of Dhaka, founded it as St Joseph English medium school at 16 Monir Hossain Road at Narinda in Dhaka in 1954. The school was shifted to its present site at Mohammadpur in 1965. It continued as Cambridge school only until all English medium schools were asked by the government of Bangladesh to introduce Bengali medium in 1972. Then it was registered with the Dhaka Education Board. Though it is still known as English medium school. In 1999, it became a college by opening higher secondary (Science) section. Gradually, it offers Commerce and Humanities. The medium of instruction is here in both Bangla and English. It is an aided private institution and is conducted by Brothers of Holy Cross. It has an excellent academic record both in Cambridge and SSC examinations.
It is for boys only and the students are known as Josephites. Students are generally admitted here in Class III and the annual intake is around 165. The total number of students in the school is about 2111. There are three sections for class III to X. Around 50-60 students are enrolled in each section. The school has a beautiful campus of 3.5 acres with many species of trees and plants. The total number of teachers is 45 at school level and 25 is at college level. Of them female teachers are 17.
The labs of the school are very rich and equipment is modern. There are also being used by some external schools and educational institutions. Lab facilities include tow computer labs equipped with multimedia projectors, a separate Internet lab, two advanced chemistry labs, two physics labs and two biology labs. It has a playground for soccer, basketball, cricket, volleyball and badminton. The students of the school participate in various extracurricular activities and they have different forum and clubs namely Scientilla Science Club, Josephite Debating Club, Josephite Chess Club, Josephite Interact Club, Josephite Language and Reading Club, Josephite Business Club, Josephite Eco Earth Club, St Joseph Boy Scouts, Josephite Cultural Forum and Josephite Drama Group.
Beside the general educational system, the school also provides education for under privileged children, known as the 'Literacy School'. After the independence of Bangladesh, the free school started its journey and permitted admission upto class V. Presently, the students numbering 175 getting education from here. Students of the regular school often volunteer as teachers for the Literacy School.
The students and teachers of the school publish individually two Year Book styled The Josephite Students and The Josephite Teacher's Edition respectively. Notable personality grand master Niaz Morshed was student of this school. [Brother Leo Pereira]
