Bangladesh Botanical Society

Bangladesh Botanical Society (BBS) a non-political and non-profit organisation established in early 1972 to promote research in plant sciences in the country. The office of the society is located at the Department of Botany, university of dhaka. Persons having at least an MSc degree in Botany may apply for regular membership of BBS. Persons not having a Masters in Botany but interested in Plant Sciences are eligible for associate membership of the society.

At present the membership of the society stands at about 1050. Internationally famous plant scientists like Dr Norman E Borlaug (Nobel Laureate), Professor Arun Kumar Sharma, and Dr Swaminathan are honorary members of the society.

Since 1972 the society has been regularly publishing a biannual journal, the Bangladesh Journal of Botany. The journal is being abstracted in Current Contents, Biological Abstracts and Advances in Plant Science since 1982.

In addition, the society publishes a Bangla bulletin named Udvid Barta containing popular articles related to plant science. The society maintains two trust funds to award scholarships/medals/awards to students and plant scientists for outstanding academic and research performance. The society holds annual meetings and biennial conferences regularly and publishes its proceedings. The ministry of Science and Technology, Government of Bangladesh, provides financial support to the society. The society has an executive council for its management. [Syed Hadiuzzaman]
