Choudhury, Golam Wahed

Choudhury, Golam Wahed (1926-1997) educationist. He was born in 1926 in Madaripur district. His father was Golam Mawla Choudhury and mother Faima Choudhury. His mother was the daughter of Ibrahim Saber, brother of Begum Rokeya.

Golam Wahed Choudhury obtained his BA (Hons) and MA degrees in Political Science in 1945 and 1946 respectively from calcutta university. He joined the Department of International Relations in dhaka university as Lecturer in 1948 and later joined the Department of Political Science.

He obtained PhD from Columbia University, USA in 1956. He served as a teacher in Dhaka University till 1967, and joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan as Director General. During his teaching career he worked as Visiting Professor in a number of Universities of the United Kingdom and of the USA.

Golam Wahed Choudhury was also in diplomatic service. He participated in the bilateral discussions between Pakistan and China and between Pakistan and Soviet Union. He played a key role in reducing the disparity between East Pakistan and West Pakistan.

After the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, Golam Wahed Choudhury spent most of his time teaching abroad in the Universities like Columbia University, Duke University and North Carolina University of USA. Professor Choudhury was assoiated with a member of social and charitable organisations. Before his death he founded the Golam Mowla Faima Trust and established a number of charitable institutions in Madaripur district. He died in December 1997. [Dilara Chowdhury]
