Rahman, Latifur

Rahman, Latifur (1945-2020) a well-known businessman of Bangladesh. He was born on 28 August 1945 in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. His father's name is Khan Bahadur Mujibur Rahman and Mother’s name is Begum Sakera Banu. He spent his childhood in Gandaria of old Dhaka. He started his studies at St. Francis School. Later studied at St. Xavier's College of Kolkata. Latifur Rahman returned to Dhaka in 1965. After coming back to Dhaka, he started working as a trainee at W. Rahman Jute Mill in 1966. Until 1971, he served as an executive here. W Rahman Jute Mill was nationalized in 1972. Then he founded Transcom Group in 1973.

He started everything new in 1972 practically without a penny. Transcom Group is now a top business organization of Bangladesh. He was its chairman. He maintained ethics in conducting business. In 2012, he received the Business for Peace Award in recognition of doing business with integrity and reputation. This award is highly acclaimed in the world of business. He is the first Bangladeshi to receive this rare honour.

Latifur Rahman was the Chairman and Managing Director of Mediastar Limited, which runs the daily Prothom Alo. He was not just an honest, dedicated and celebrity businessman. He was a noble man. He has made a great contribution to the establishment of an independent media in Bangladesh. Latifur Rahman has made the Transcom Group a role model for other businessmen as good tax and duties payer to the government. Transcom Group has expanded beyond the country also. He has various businesses including in media, electronics, medicine, electrical, tea, soft drinks, and consumer goods providing employment to several thousand people. Latifur Rahman was the sole importer and distributor of Nestlé in Bangladesh in the 1980s. He served seven times as president of Dhaka Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Latifur Rahman died at his home on July 1, 2020 in Chiora village of Cumilla district. He has left behind his wife, son and daughters. His wife's name is Shahnaz Rahman, son Arshad Waliur Rahman and daughters are Simin Rahman, Shajreh Rahman, and Shajneen Rahman. [Rafiqul Islam Rafiq]
