Shah Niamatullah (R)1

Shah Niamatullah (R)1 a saint of the pre-Mughal period. It is said that he was originally a prince of Baghdad. Tradition goes that Niamatullah gave up a luxurious life, turned ascetic and came to India to preach Islam. Eventually he came to Bengal and settled at dhaka where he established his khanqah. He waged war against idol worship and converted a large number of people to Islam. He was called Butshekan meaning iconoclast. He lies buried beside the mosque in Dilkusha garden by the side of the DIT building. There are three graves; the middle one is said to be of Shah Niamatullah. [Mosharraf Hussain Bhuiyan]
