New page

Bangiya Sahitya Bisayini Mussalman Samiti a Bangali Muslim literary society, was set up in 1899 in calcutta at the initiative of Syed nawab ali chowdhury, zamindar of Dhanbari, who became its founder president. sheikh abdur rahim was its secretary. The meeting was attended by poets and writers including Sheikh Abdur Rahim, muhammad reazuddin ahmad, Dad Ali, mohammad rowshan ali chowdhury, mohammad mozammel huq, mohammad akram khan, abul hussain, muhammad shahidullah, munshi mohammad meherullah, Munshi shaikh jamiruddin, and Moulvi Abdur Rahman Khan. The object of the society was to awaken Muslim society through the cultivation of Bangla.

Syed Nawab Ali Chowdhury offered a gold medal for the best Bangla essay written on the past and present conditions of Bengali Muslims. Several Bangla books were published by the society. The society protested against the attempts of some Hindu writers to denigrate historic Muslim personages in their writings. Its protest against the non-inclusion of any Muslim member in the central text book committee led the Bengal government to nominate Sheikh Abdur Rahim. In this way the society promoted the sense of nationalism and self-determination of Bengali Muslims. In 1911 the society became part of the bangiya mussalman sahitya samiti (Bengal Muslim Literary Society) formed in Calcutta. [Wakil Ahmed]
