Although his surname was Chattopadhyay, he is better known by his title of Tarkalankar. He received his early schooling at his village school. In 1829, he was admitted to [[sanskrit college]], Kolkata where [[iswar chandra vidyasagar]] was his classmate and friend. Both of them studied literature, grammar, rhetoric, astrology and &amp;#039;&amp;#039;sm&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;r&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;&amp;#039;iti&amp;#039;&amp;#039; (law-treatises) with [[jaygopal tarkalankar]] and Premchand Tarkavagish.
