New page

Sayed Ahmed Khan an influential amir in the Murshidabad durbar. Sayed Ahmed Khan is the second son of Haji Ahmed and Naib Faujdar of Ghoraghat and Rangpur during the time of sarfaraz khan. He reduced to submission the Rajas of Dinajpur and Kuch Bihar who had so long evaded obedience to the nawab's government and seized their enormous wealth. Sayed Ahmed, entitled Saulat Jang married the second daughter of Nawab alivardi khan. During the time of Alivardi Khan, Mirza Baqar, son-in-law of Rustum Jang took offensive against Alivardi's troops in Orissa. A bloody fight ensued in which Mirza Baqar was severely wounded. Rustum Jang fled with his wounded son-in-law. Alivardi Khan remained in Orissa for a month.

The nawab left Sayed Ahmed Khan, his nephew and son-in-law, as Naib Nazim of Orissa and returned to Murshidabad. It was a bad choice as Sayed Ahmed was quite unfit to administer a newly acquired territory. There was discontent among the old officers. At their invitation Mirza Baqar came again with a batch of Maratha infantry, re-entered Cuttack and captured Sayed Ahmed and his family. Alivardi, thereupon, led an expedition against Mirza Baqar for redeeming Sayed Ahmed and his family. After a close fight he succeeded in his mission. Leaving Sayed Ahmed once again at Orissa with Durlabh Ram, son of Raja Janakiram, as his assistant the nawab returned to the capital.

As a ruler Sayed Ahmed proved himself worthless. He died during the lifetime of Alivardi Khan leaving behind a son named shawkat jang who later contested the throne of Murshidabad with sirajuddaula. [KM Karim]
