Body scaleless; barbels surround the mouth. The fish contains significant amount of protein, fat, calcium and iron. According to a report by the Directorate of Fisheries tengra fish contains 1.5 times higher calorific value than rui fish (labeo rohita). It is a carnivorous fish, usually a bottom-feeder.&lt;br /&gt;

The five species of tengra occurring in Bangladesh can be recognized by the following features: (i) golsha tengra (Mystus bleekeri)- body brownish above, lighter below. There are 2 light longitudinal bands, one above and the other below the lateral line. Attains a body length up to 14 cm. (ii) tengra (M. vittatus) - two dark wide bands above and two narrow bands below lateral line. Attains a length of about 10 cm. (iii) guli tengra (M. gulio) - body brown on back, dull white below. Mandibular barbels partly black. Attains a length of about 20 cm. (iv) kabasi tengra (M. cavasius) - a black spot present at the base of the dorsal spine. Attains a length of about 15 cm. (v) bujuri tengra (M. tengra) - body brownish, a black spot behind operculum. Few longitudinal bands are present on the body. Attains a length of about 6 cm.  [Md Golam Mustafa]&lt;br /&gt;
