Mohammad, Ghulam

Mohammad, Ghulam (1895-1956) Governor General of Pakistan. Born on 20 April 1895 in the state of Kapurthala (now a part of the Indian province of the Punjab), he graduated from the Aligarh University and joined the Indian Accounts Service in 1920. He served in the Bhopal State Service for two years (1930-1932) and then joined the Finance and Supply Department of Government of India. In 1938 he was nominated to the Indian Legislative Assembly as an official member. Between 1942 and 1946 he was the Minister for Finance in the State of Hyderabad. He was the Minister of Finance in the first cabinet of Pakistan. After the assassination of Prime Minister Liaqat Ali Khan (1951) khwaja nazimuddin was appointed Prime Minister while Ghulam Mohammad was made the Governor General. In 1953, he dismissed Nazimuddin's government and installed Muhammad Ali of Bogra as the new Prime Minister. In 1954 the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan tried to change the Constitution to establish a check and balance in the powers of the Governor General. In response, Ghulam Mohammad dissolved the Constituent Assembly. The Acting Governor General Iskandar Mirza dismissed him on 6 October 1955 and himself became the Governor General.

Ghulam Mohammad died in Lahore on 12 September 1956. [Abu Jafar]
