Armed Forces Medical College situated within the Dhaka cantonment was established by the government of Bangladesh in 1999. Till 2008 it was affiliated with the University of Dhaka and at present it is affiliated with the University of Professionals. The College is a public institute under the Ministry of Defense, Government of the Peoples' Republic of Bangladesh and it is approved by the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council. Combined Military Hospital with a facility of keeping 850 in-patients fulfills the purpose of clinical education and practical training of the students. The official designations of head of both of these institutions is 'Commandant' and these two sister concerns run their affairs in co-operation with each other. Although yet under construction by the budget allocation of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Kurmitola General Hospital with 500 in-patient beds on commission will also be used for the same purpose. After five years of under graduate education the successful students are conferred with the MBBS degree. After graduation to achieve the right of providing medical care and treatment advices to the patients and public in general, it is mandatory for everyone to seek registration from Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council for which at least one year of practical training in various departments of an approved hospital is a requirement.
