Choudhury, Sultan Ahmed
Choudhury, Sultan Ahmed (1910-1998) renowned child specialist, Emeritus Professor. He was born Chittagong in 1910. He earned Bachelor in Medicine (MB) degree from the Calcutta Medical College in 1935; a Diploma in Tropical Medicine (DTM) from Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 1937; Diploma in Public Health (DPH) from All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health, Calcutta in 1938. He had been in the UK for higher training in pediatrics and medicine (1949-1951). He obtained Diploma in Child Health (DCH) in 1950 from the Institute of Child Health, London.
Sultan Ahmed was House Surgeon, Calcutta Medical College Hospital; Research Assistant in Tropical Medicine and Dermatology, School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta; Health Officer, Bogra and Rangpur; Senior House Physician, Calcutta Medical College Hospital; Medical Officer, Walsh Hospital, Serampore, Hooghly; Resident Physician, Calcutta Medical College Hospital; Civil Surgeon, Bogra, and Teacher of Medicine, Jackson Medical School, Jalpaiguri, India. He was a Mohsin Scholar all through his career at Calcutta Medical College. He was Class Assistant in medical jurisprudence and secured a Gold Medal for special proficiency in the subject.
Since 1961 he served as an Associate Professor of Medicine and, then, as a Professor of Clinical Medicine at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He founded the Skin and Venereal Disease Outpatient Department in Dhaka Medical College Hospital and was in-charge. He was an Associate Professor of Pediatrics for over 15 years, Founder Director and Professor of Pediatrics, dhaka shishu hospital from early 1972 and was Emeritus Professor of Emeritus in Child Health since 1972. He was a consultant of Pediatrician, Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital (1972-1978); Honorary Professor and Consultant of Pediatrician, IPGMR, Dhaka; Adviser, Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Dhaka University.
Sultan Ahmed received several awards and Gold Medals in Medical Jurisprudence; Bangladesh Pediatric Association award (1990), Ibn Sina Trust Award (1991), etc. In recognition of his great contributions to Medical science and service in the field of Pediatrics. He also established several awards in his name for the advancement of scientific education and research.
He had been a Fellow/Member of several National and International bodies as an eminent Pediatrician such as a Fellow of the International College of Pediatrics, Geneva, and a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences (1985), Bangladesh.
Sultan Ahmed published several scientific papers on common childhood problems in the country, especially on nutrition, infection, and common skin diseases. He passed away on 10 October 1998. [Yearul Kabir]
