The sura is referred to variously as: f'a'tih'a'tul kit'a'b (the beginning of the book), s'u'r'a'tud du'a (the prayer sura), ummul kitab (the essence of the book), etc. It contains seven a'y'a'ts (verses) and was revealed at the beginning of hazrat muhammad';s (Sm) prophethood. The fatiha is recited at the beginning of every r'a'k'a;'a't in namaz.
