Postal Museum

Postal Museum was first established in 1966 in Dhaka and was situated beside the main facade of the General Post Office (GPO) counter. Later, in 1985 it was shifted to the third floor of the Dhaka GPO. The museum consists of two rooms of 2,160 square feet. One room houses ancient post office memorabilia, from a life-size statue of a modern-day runner with spear, lantern and a bag of postal materials on his back, weapons, including guns and other equipments used by runners. There are also different letter boxes of different ages including a giant one from Victorian times and modern post boxes from around the world, hand and electrically operated franking machines of different brands and ages, a replica of floating mobile post office used in Khulna and Barisal region. There are age-old scales to weigh mail, scales up to the weight of seven mounds (for parcel materials), post office seals and cancellers, watches, badges of runners and peons, uniforms, different bags for carrying mails and other apparatus used by the post office personnel from centuries ago. The other room of the postal museum is filled with the postage stamps received from 191 member countries of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) displayed in glass cases. [Siddique Mahmudur Rahman]
