Radish

Radish (mula) a popular vegetable, Raphanus sativus, of the family Cruciferae, cultivated in about 24,372 ha producing about 2,23,300 m tons; leaf is rich in vitamin A, B and C, while the fleshy edible root contains moderate amount of vitamin C, calcium and phosphorus.

Radish is consumed fresh as salad and after cooking with fish or other vegetables. Sometimes radish is used as an ingredient of pickles. Commonly, radish is a winter crop but can be grown to some extent in summer. Red Bombay, Mino Early, Mino Saki are some of the important varieties. Recently Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute released 3 varieties namely Tasakisan (long white root), Pinky (pinksih root with more pungent), and Druti (white coloured and early maturing). The yield ranges 30-35 m tons/ha. [SM Monowar Hossain]
