Sardar, Lalmohammad
Sardar, Lalmohammad (1848-1936) a self-made man, social worker and a politician. He was born in a lower middle class peasant family in the village of Velna under Puthia thana of Rajshahi district in 1848. He had to stop his formal education when he was only fourteen. He started his life as a poor labourer. But in course of time he earned a lot of money from brickfield business and turned a zamindar purchasing estates through auction. He established a palace like kachari in Kadirganj.
Lalmohammad Sardar had not only earned money but also contributed much in social, cultural and political fields. He was the founder president of Anjuman Mufidul Islam (1906) of Rajshahi district. He was associated with saratkumar ray in the collection of archaeological finds in the Varendra region. In 1926 he was elected a member of Rajshahi District Board and subsequently was elected to the Legislative Council. He died in 1936 AD. [SM Abdul Latif]
