Yusuf, Harun KM
Yusuf, Harun KM (1947-2009) an educationist, scientist, and nutritionist. He was born on 31 January 1947 in Bhola (Barisal), Bangladesh.
He did BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry with First Position in First Class, Dhaka University in 1968; MSc in Biochemistry with First Position in First Class, Dhaka University in 1969; PhD in Human Nutrition, University of Surrey, England in 1976.
Yusuf was a Lecturer (1970-1976), Assistant Professor (1976-1979), Associate Professor (1979-1985), and Professor (1985-2009) in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Dhaka; Part-time Faculty of the James P. Grant School of Public Health, BRAC University (2005-2009).
As Principal Investigator-in-charge, he was associated with National Low Birth Weight and Anaemia Survey in Bangladesh-2003 project of BRAC/BBS/UNICEF. He also worked on food consumption and nutritional status of people in selected production and consumption areas of Bangladesh Ministry of Science and Information and Communication Technology, Government of Bangladesh. He was involved in building nutrition components in World Food Program (WFP) in Bangladesh (2006-2010). He conducted National Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) and Universal Salt Iodization (USI) surveys in Bangladesh in 2004-2005.
Harun was awarded HP Roy Gold Medal by the Dhaka University, 1979; Justice Ibrahim Memorial Gold Medal by the Dhaka University, 1991; Halima-Sharafuddin Award by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, 1993; Nutrition Award by the Nutrition Society of Bangladesh, 2002; Commonwealth Scholarship offered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, UK, 1973; Post-doctoral Research Fellowship by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation during 1981-1983 and 1985-1986.
Harun has more than 91 scientific publications in national and international journals.
He was Vice-Chancellor, Patuakhali Science and Technology University (1999-2001), Fellow, ICTP, Italy; Fellow, IPPS, Uppsala University, Sweden; Fellow, Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. Harun KM Yusuf expired on 11 November 2009. [Yearul Kabir]
