Pakundia Upazila

Pakundia Upazila (kishoreganj district) 'area 180.52 sq km, located in between 24°15' and 24°24' north latitudes and in between 90°37' and 90°46' east longitudes. It is bounded by hossainpur and kishoreganj sadar upazilas on the north, kapasia and monohardi upazilas on the south, katiadi upazila on the east, gaffargaon' upazila on the west.

Population Total 237218; male 120386, female 116832; Muslim 232210, Hindu 4860, Buddhist 10 and others 138.

Water bodies Main rivers: old brahmaputra, Narasunda, banar, Mangalahat; Padmakuri Beel, Bhara Beel, Kaheterdia Beel, Chaityakbali Beel, Baranala Beel, Bejurnala Beel, Naothaghya Beel, Digha Beel.

Administration Pakundia Thana was formed in 1922 and it was turned into an upazila on 14 September 1983.

Archaeological heritage and relics Fort of Isa Khan at Egarasindur, Mosque of Mughal period.

History of the War of Liberation Direct encounters between the freedom fighters and the Pak army were held in different places of the upazila including Tarakandi, Kodalia and Kaliachapra. The Pak army, in collaboration with their local agents (razakars and dalals) killed about 200 people of the upazila and buried them in a mass grave at a place adjacent to the present BADC building. Freedom Fighter Badiul Alam was awarded the title of 'Bir Bikram' for his heroic role in the war of liberation. Pakundia was liberated in December.

Noted educational institutions: Pakundia Degree College (1965), Pakundia Model Mohila Degree College (1993), Jangalia Union School and College (1969), Kodalia SI High School (1910), Pakundia Model Degree College, Pakundia Model Pilot High School (1958), Mangalbaria Kamil Madrasa (1802), Tarakandi Fazil Madrasa (1919).

Access to electricity All the unions of the upazila are under rural electrification net-work. However 13.79% of the dwelling households have access to electricity.

Sources of drinking water Tube-well' 84.51%, tap 0.66%, pond 0.97% and others 13.86%.

Sanitation 24.50% (rural 23.25% and urban 52.88%) of dwelling households of the upazila use sanitary latrines and 42.89% (rural 43.31% and urban 33.27%) of dwelling households use non-sanitary latrines; 32.61% of households do not have latrine facilities.
