Baghmara Upazila

Baghmara Upazila (rajshahi district) area 366.26 sq km, located in between 24°30' and 24°41' north latitudes and in between 88°41' and 88°58' east longitudes. It is bounded by manda and atrai upazilas on the north, durgapur, puthia and natore sadar upazilas on the south, Atrai and Natore Sadar upazilas on the east, mohanpur upazila on the west.

Population Total 354664; male 177157, female 177507; Muslim 338013, Hindu 16494, Christian 6 and others 151.

Water bodies Main river: Baranai; Fakinni river, Beel Joshoi, Takta Beel, Mosher Beel, Nakkati Beel, Katila Beel and Bagir Dara (water channel), Talgharia Dara and Komorpur Dara are notable.

Administration Baghmara Thana was formed in 1869 and it was turned into an upazila in 1984.

Archaeological heritage and relics Mazar of Panchpir and Shahi Mosque at village Achin Ghat on the bank of the river Baranai.

War of Liberation On 24 May 1971 the Pak army made a surprise attack on Taherpur Hat and shot 25 persons dead. A group of freedom fighters led by Havilder Shafiq attacked a patrol boat of the Pak army and killed 18 Pakistani soldiers.

Main exports Betel leaf, banana, papaya, vegetables.

Access to electricity All the wards and unions of the upazila are under rural electricity net-work. However 41.6% of the dwelling households have access to electricity.

Sources of drinking water Tube-well 91.4%, tap 3.0% and others 5.6%. The presence of arsenic has been detected in shallow tube-well water of the upazila.

Sanitation 57.1% of dwelling households of the upazila use sanitary latrines and 36.0% of dwelling houses use non-sanitary latrines; 6.9% of households do not have latrine facilities.
