Abul Kashem began his career as a teacher at Kashinathpur A L High School in Pabna in 1966. He joined as Lecturer in History in Pabna Edward College in 1970. He attended a six-weeks military training course of Pakistan Cadet Corps in Savar in June-July 1970. With the beginning of the War of Liberation in 1971 Abul Kashem returned to his village to organise and induce the youths to join the war, and helped supply of food and provisions to the freedom fighters resisting the occupation army. On 9 September 1971, while returning home from Pabna Abul Kashem was kidnapped by a group of Razakars from near the Chhondaha bridge. Thereafter he could not be traced.
