Mirza Majharul Islam

Islam, Mirza Majharul (1927-2020) is a prominent language movement veteran, physician, writer, and educationist. He was born on 1 January 1927 at Agacaran village under Kalihati in Tangail. His father Helaluddin was an officer in a British company, and his mother Chhanda Khatun was a housewife.

Dr. Mazharul obtained his MBBS degree as a student of the first batch of the Dhaka Medical College in 1952 and began his career at the public hospital in 1954. He was the head of the Department of Surgery and then became the Principal of the Dhaka Medical College & Hospital. He was the honorary chief consultant of the Department of Surgery at birdem Hospital at the time of his death.

He was a member of the first two Sangram Parishads (Platforms for struggle) of the language movement (1947-1948) and one of the builders of the first shaheed minar. He led the Dhaka Medical College students in the 1952 language movement. Dr. Mirza Majharul Islam was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2018 for his contribution in the language movement.

Dr. Mirza Majharul Islam died on 11 October 2020 and was buried at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectuals’ Graveyard in Dhaka. [Yearul Kabir]
